SET UP | MATHIEU LEHANNEUR

The sneakers’ world represents the truly experimental frontier in shoes design. Typological experimentation, anatomical research, innovative materials are just some aspects of an increasingly evolved and captivating field.

Under the title “Playground”, the MADD of Bordeaux is dedicating a very special exhibition (until January 31, 2021) to this theme: the historical models with the autograph of the champion who wore them at the time.

Particularly unusual is the setting conceived by Mathieu Lehanneur, one of the most avant-garde and visionary of contemporary French design. It is structured on simple prisms surmounted by plexiglas cubes. The “diversity” of this scenic layout derives precisely from the use of color: the three shades (pale green, salmon pink and light yellow) are applied in a nuanced way, with a spray effect, to echo the urban youth cultures.

ARCHITECTURE | UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX

The Southend-on-Sea campus, built in 2010 to accomodate 500 students from the University of Essex, is made up of various blocks of different heights, which delimit three sides of a vast block.

Under an almost always gray sky and alongside a traditional and timid building, the Marshall office’s project hinges on a courageous use of color in the treatment of the facades, for which high-performance laminated panels have been used.

The pattern derives from the alternation of vertical and horizontal rectangular frames that surround the windows. Four colors were chosen: green, blue, red and yellow with contrasting use of black, gray and white.

The use of a prefabricated building system has allowed the color to energize the facades obtained with a repetitive module and to give the complex an unmistakable identity in the urban landscape.

FASHION | ISSEY MIYAKE

Among the few men’s collections presented last July for spring summer 20-21, the one of Issey Miyake, called “Plissé”, can really enchant us. The Japanese designer presented the new menswear line only through photography on the web, but perhaps this solution appears – at least in this case – really effective for the enhancement of the splendid color palette.

Garments with an almost elementary cut, but embellished with the famous finely pleated fabric, which composes jackets, pants, Bermuda shorts and bags. In addition to contrasting the simplicity of the design with the dynamic effect of the accordion fabric, Miyake focuses on the choice of saturated, captivating colors, ranging from light purple to acid green, from China blue to apricot. Most of the collection relies on solid colors, with the possibility of creating sophisticated but never affected color blocks.

FURNITURE | NUCLEO

In It’s All About Color i colori sostituiscono il bianco che caratterizzava i pezzi (unici) nelle edizioni originali.

The Studio Nucleo’s work shuns the art/design bipolarity. Rather, it is the result of much more research on matter and technology, which recognizes in resins a very powerful and inexhaustible DNA.

From the 1st of July to the end of November, the most recent furniture collections created by the Turin organization, led by Piergiorgio Robino, are the protagonists of an “in progress” exhibition at the Nilufar gallery in Milan, where the works will appear on a monthly basis.

In “It’s All About Color”, colors replace the white that characterized the (unique) pieces in the original editions. The new hues, with a decidedly surreal character, enhance the sense of manipulation, of concreteness that does not want to succumb to the rigid geometry of macro-pixels. And they give lamps, chairs and tables the most intense vibrations, chiaroscuro that enriches the emotion typical of many experimental furnishings.

COLORI DA PIC-NIC
PIC-NIC COLOURS

PRODUCT | PHARRELL WILLIAMS

Picnic cutlery by Pharrel Williams are made with the CDs. The organization I Am Other owned by the american popstar, together with Pentatonic, leader in the circular economy, has produced a hyper-colored, recycled and recyclable set to teach us to do without the disposable plastic.

The project is called Pebble and consists of a set of cutlery for the outside meals. A pebble-shaped shell (to which the name refers) contains a spoon, a fork, a knife, chopsticks and a straw. Everything folds up and dismantles to minimize the volume.

Great protagonist of recycled plastic: most of the material used comes from the large disposal of polycarbonate deriving from CDs, DVDs and food packaging. And everything is treated to be recycled, as well as being washed in the dishwasher.

The meal kit is presented as a mix of pastel colours for the handles in contrast with the metallic parts, realized in anodized steel covered by iridescent titanium.
