SET UP | BIENNALE DI VENEZIA 2021

A tre mesi dalla conclusione della Biennale di Venezia, i bilanci coinvolgono anche la qualità e l’incisività degli allestimenti. Fra i più significativi viene annoverato il padiglione dell’Uzbekistan, che contiene un modello in scala 1:1 della sagoma di una casa mahalla, realizzato in tubolare d’acciaio smaltato di giallo.

Le tradizionali abitazioni mahalla sono un modello abitativo/architettonico ma anche un sistema di vita comunitaria radicato nella storia del paese, mantenuto anche attraverso le interpretazioni moderniste sovietiche e ancora presente nella capitale Taskent. Queste case tendono a crescere in base all’espansione del nucleo familiare, raramente per più di due piani, formando quartieri ad alta a forte coesione sociale.

L’installazione, intitolata “Mahalla: Urban Rural Living”, è stata progettata dai professori dell’ETH di Zurigo Emanuel Christ e Christoph Gantenbein.

The hatched house – Three months after the conclusion of the Venice Biennale, the balances also involve the quality and incisiveness of the set-ups. Among the most significant is the Uzbekistan pavilion, which contains a 1:1 scale model of the outline of a mahalla house, made of yellow-enamelled steel tubing.

Traditional mahalla dwellings are a housing/architectural model but also a system of community life rooted in the country’s history, also maintained through Soviet modernist interpretations and still present in the capital Tashkent. These houses tend to grow based on the expansion of the family unit, rarely for more than two floors, forming high-socially cohesive neighborhoods.

The installation, entitled “Mahalla: Urban Rural Living”, was designed by ETH Zurich professors Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein.
