Per un progettista, il confronto con le preesistenze costituisce il perno di ogni occasione lavorativa. Lo sa bene anche Manuel Tojal, a capo di un attivissimo studio professionale in Portogallo.

Il dialogo tra vecchio e nuovo è esemplificato magistralmente da un recente lavoro a Lisbona, dove l’architetto è intervenuto in un appartamento di un edificio del XIX secolo. Egli mette a confronto tre entità distinte: l’involucro originale, che congela nel total white; la possente pavimentazione in grosse doghe di legno naturale; e infine gli inserti su progetto, a livello sia di finitura sia di arredo vero e proprio.

Questa terza parte è rigorosamente coordinata: legno laccato di verde chiaro (virato verso il giallo). È così che cucina, zoccolature, armadi e infissi conferiscono all’appartamento un’indiscutibile cifra unitaria, anche se lo snodo visivo dell’intero spazio è rappresentato dall’apertura circolare tra soggiorno e zona cottura.

The magic circle – For a designer, the comparison with pre-existing structures is the cornerstone of every working opportunity. Manuel Tojal is also well aware of this, as he heads a very active professional studio in Portugal.

The dialogue between old and new is masterfully exemplified by a recent work in Lisbon, where the architect intervened in an apartment in a 19th century building. He compares three distinct entities: the original casing, which freezes in total white; the mighty flooring in large natural wooden slats; and finally the custom-designed inserts, both in terms of finish and actual furnishings.

This third part is rigorously coordinated: light green lacquered wood (with a yellow tint). This is how the kitchen, plinths, wardrobes and fixtures give the apartment an indisputable unitary figure, even if the visual hub of the entire space is represented by the circular opening between the living room and the cooking area.
