Nel Parco Nazionale del Joshua Tree, nel deserto della California, sorge una casa un po’ metafisica progettata da Josh Schweitzer. Completata nel 1990, si chiama Monument House ed è stata è stata per lungo tempo il suggestivo ed estremo luogo di vacanza dell’architetto e della sua famiglia. Ora invece è aperta al pubblico.
L’architettura risente vagamente delle suggestioni decostruttiviste di quel periodo, ma si integra con il paesaggio, abbracciato visivamente a 360°, grazie alle forme sghembe e asimmetriche. L’edificio è composto da tre blocchi distinti, di cui due chiusi e collegati fra loro, mentre il terzo è in realtà un enorme gazebo in muratura aperto su tutti i lati.
I tre volumi sono differenziati soprattutto cromaticamente, con tinte assai sofisticate che comunque si integrano mirabilmente con lo scenario naturale: verde muschio, turchese cupo e terracotta, che sembrano rispecchiare l’asprezza della terra e la mutevolezza del cielo.
Negli interni, a doppia altezza, prevalgono l’arancio carico e il verde pallido a contrasto.

Lights and colors of the desert – In Joshua Tree National Park, in the California desert, stands a somewhat metaphysical house designed by Josh Schweitzer. Completed in 1990, it’s name is Monument House and it was for a long time the evocative and remote vacation spot of the architect and his family. Now, however, it is open to the public.
The architecture is vaguely influenced by the deconstructivist influences of that period, but integrates with the landscape, visually embracing it at 360°, thanks to its skewed and asymmetrical forms. The building is composed of three distinct blocks, two of which are closed and interconnected, while the third is actually a huge masonry gazebo open on all sides.
The three volumes are differentiated primarily by color, with highly sophisticated hues that nevertheless blend admirably with the natural setting: moss green, dark turquoise, and terracotta, which seem to reflect the harshness of the earth and the changeable sky.
The double-height interiors are dominated by bright orange and contrasting pale green.
