ROSA COME LA PANTERA

RETAIL | BALENCIAGA

Pink like the panther – Last April, another “invention” from the Balenciaga Maison appeared. The creative director Demna Gvasalia wanted a very special (and temporary) restyling of the London store, in Mount Street. To promote the new version of Le Cagole, the Parisian brand’s iconic handbag, the store was completely covered in long-haired pink synthetic fur. Floor, walls, displays, seats and shelves have thus taken on a very bold tactile and visual effect, capable of overwhelming the customer in a multi-sensory trip.

The use of this material is by no means new – think of the radical groups of the 1960s and 1970s – but in this creation it appears all-encompassing and immersive, above all thanks to the solid colour, which can also be perceived from the street, through the shop windows.

CAVERNE ESOTERICHE

ARCHITECTURE | GOETHEANUM

Esoteric caves – The Goetheanum is a monumental building designed by Rudolf Steiner, who was also its founder. He defined it as “a living building placed inside a plastic body”: the plasticity of the forms derives from an organic and visionary use of exposed reinforced concrete, at the time a completely heterodox material.

It is located in Dornach (near Basel, Switzerland) and represents one of the rare architectures of the expressionist vein. Almost a century after its inauguration, it is a little known work. Today it is a congress center, but it was originally a center of anthroposophical studies.

The internal volumes, supple and dynamic, have been decorated – we do not know if on the recommendation of Steiner or if by virtue of subsequent interpretations – with intense but faded colors, rarefied and inhomogeneous, which create the image of artificial caves, with a strong spiritual involvement.

SHOCKING TERRACE

SET UP | MVRDV

Shocking terrace – A few months ago, the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam proudly announced The Podium: a spectacular platform on the top of the same cultural center which, for the first time, became accessible to the visitors.

The amazing fluorescent pink installation, accessible via a special and impressive external staircase, was designed by MVRDV, one of the most important Dutch architectural firms.

Open from 1 June to 17 August 2022, The Podium offered a “panoramic” opportunity to experience architecture, the city, the Museum Park and the institute from a completely new perspective, in an impressive three-dimensional game. This city stage occupied the roof at a height of 29 meters. In addition to hosting an interactive exhibition of MVRDV’s first works, it hosted numerous cultural and multidisciplinary initiatives for most of the summer.

The chromatic choice that characterizes this temporary intervention sees the affirmation of shocking pink as a trendy color.

IL CAFFÈ DISTOPICO

INTERIOR | HARRY NURIEV

Distopic coffee – Crosby Studios presents Café 2046, a recently opened space with a cyberpunk flavor in Moscow.

Steel, concrete, LED panels and neon green surfaces make up the unexpected palette for the latest project by the artist and architect Harry Nuriev, active in New York and Moscow. It takes its name from the 2004 science fiction film by Wong Kar-Wai, entitled “2046”. The space is a “combination of reality and virtual reality” and offers coffee and baked goods in a tempting but dystopian setting.

Nuriev, known for his cutting-edge design ethic, has been named a global authority in minimalism and praised for his ability to create eye-catching spaces for the Instagram era. The designer often uses bold colors in his monochromatic works, but neon green, “a color that is rarely seen in interiors”, offered a unique challenge that intends to push the visual experience into a wide variety of places.

DA MEMPHIS ALLE HAWAII

ARCHITECTURE | ETTORE SOTTSASS JR.

From memphis to hawaii – In the collective imagination, the work of Ettore Sottsass jr. coincides above all with the field of furniture design, and in particular with the experience of the Memphis brand. On the other hand, his architectural projects, mostly made abroad, remain quite unknown.

One of the master’s most interesting and most recognizable works is the Olabuenaga House in Maui, Hawaii. The building (1989/97) expresses full coherence with the aesthetic world of the designer, who conceives it as a complex interlocking of colored parallelepipeds.

But this is not a mere formal exercise. The game of offsets and asymmetries reflects the internal functional organization.

Obviously the color palette is the one we find in contemporary projects by Sottsass himself and most of the postmodern current. Clear and lively colors such as red, green, yellow and white also characterize the interior (with the addition of pink, light blue and other pastel shades), which appears simultaneously friendly and schematic.

MIAMI VISIONARIA

ARCHITECTURE | KARIM RASHID

Visionary Miami – Karim Rashid’s occasional forays into architecture – which so far have hardly been realized – are a provocative transposition of his typical language. They are often a-scalar proposals, which appear as large psychedelic “objects” devoid of any connection with the context, but capable of unhinging the consolidated rules of places and the urban landscape.

However, the new multifunctional building, christened Kollekte, which the Anglo-Egyptian designer conceived for the city of Miami. It arises from the asymmetrical superimposition of single parallelepipeds, each characterized by a large glass window with a sinuous and variously shaped perimeter. In addition to establishing a very precise perspective link with the landscape – through the wide view of the sea – Karim explicitly recalls the chromatic tradition of the city … that of the luminous colors derived from the Deco period, with which he differentiates one volume from another.

RESINA IN PASSERELLA

SET UP | GAETANO PESCE + BOTTEGA VENETA

Resin on the catwalk – The recent Milan fashion week saw the collaboration between a luxury brand and an Italian design giant.

Bottega Veneta has entrusted Gaetano Pesce with the set up of the room in which he showed the spring 2023 collection. The designer has created a real site-specific installation with the material that has distinguished his work for decades between art and design: the resin.

On the floor he poured the polymers in a fluid version to create huge patches of different colors, retouched with pictorial details. The same procedure was applied to the dozens of chairs intended for spectators, each different from the other in color and shape of the spots.

When the room is empty, the eye perceives the chromatic kaleidoscope, at play that summarizes the expressive and material research of Gaetano Pesce, in a conflict between provisional setting and durability.

PRANZO A OZ

INTERIOR | LI XIANG

Lunch in Oz – It seems that designer Li Xiang has a fairy tale in her veins. In her creations, almost all of a collective nature, a surreal atmosphere reigns, close to the cinematic settings of the Wizard of Oz.

This is also demonstrated by the Meland restaurant in Wuhan, China. Although certified in the luxury category, it is proposed as an interesting entertainment formula for families, in which to combine food, games and visual entertainment. The landscape is dominated by playful furnishings and dreamy decorative elements, in which pastel shades alternate with bolder tones.

The chimney-like columns are covered with transparent bubbles in pale pink polycarbonate, inside which is the children’s play area. The dining tables are scattered around there, a solution that makes surveillance easier for parents.

LA CASA SULLA PIATTAFORMA

INTERIOR | MATALI CRASSET

The house on the platform – Elle Decor has recently published a service dedicated to a duplex apartment redesigned by Matali Crasset, which we want to propose again for its chromatic interest. It is located in Normandy and overlooks the sea. To enhance this visual relationship, the designer has created, near the windows, a sort of wooden stage that allows contemplation of the landscape.

The domestic space is made up of very white volumes and furniture mainly in light wood. However, great importance is also attributed to color, which defines the spaces and gives different identities to the individual elements, in a counterpoint of colors that does not fear bright colors: from bright blue to orange, from grass green to intense fuchsia. This solution creates real points of individual intimacy.

LA SIGNORA DELLE PERLE

ARTE | JAN HULING

Ascolto».

The lady of the beads – Today she calls herself a “beadist”, but Jan Huling started out as a product designer. Its meticulous beaded coverings envelop, with the simple help of glue and thread, found objects, according to a language that eludes the strict categories of art and craftsmanship.

His works, most often based on dolls or animal shapes, draw on a collective unconscious made up of fairy tales, myths and mysteries. The surfaces are similar to gems and her meticulous technique only adds to the general feeling of wonder in the viewer.

The American artist says you have as your goal “the transformation of banal sculptural forms into spectacular, meaningful and hypnotic works of art. Each piece is a meditation of color and shape, pattern and texture that is allowed to grow organically without patterns or sketches. With each new row of beads I see the personality of the piece emerge more clearly and it tells me which color it should follow, which line it should intersect. I listen”.
